With the wedding season now upon us, many couples and their families will have hundreds of decisions to make before the big day. One of those that should be at the top of your to do list is to order your wedding cake, because the process of selecting one may be a lot more than you are thinking.
Experienced bakeries make thousands of wedding cakes and not one of them are the same! Sure some may look similar, but the bride and groom, and their families are always looking for something unique – and rightly so. It’s the big day, and we understand that. So when ordering your own wedding cake, no matter where you buy it, there are a few things to consider and plan for.
Firstly, how big is your wedding going to be? How many in the party and how many guests will you have? Usually the bigger the wedding is, the more ceremonial the cutting of the cake will be. Most of the cakes we make are all real and edible ingredients, but this can be impractical with a large wedding, so you will also need to order individual wedding cake boxes. Otherwise, your wedding cake could end up in a heap of a mess trying to serve all the guests. Not a pretty site.
Secondly, the design of the cake is a very personal choice and you’ll need to visit the bakery beforehand. I recommend contacting your local baker at least a month in advance to set up a meeting and discuss the date of delivery. When a couple and their family come to see us, we show them a set of designs that we have done in the past, as well as some of the latest creations that we can do for them. We often create a design from photographs (or even magazine or book pictures) that the clients themselves bring in. This is a great idea and we really appreciate that the client that has something specific in mind. Together, we can end the first meeting with a base cake flavor, color and fondant in mind, along with the overall design of the cake.
In addition to the first two points, the actual structure of the cake will have an impact on the logistics of the wedding day. Particularly if the couple wants a tiered wedding cake. If the cake is easy to transport, then a family member can certainly come in and pick it up on the wedding day. However, tiered cakes with columns or pillars are normally transported in pieces, and as part of our service we can deliver and set it up for you on location. This is why it’s so important to book your wedding cake early so as to give us the flexibility to make sure your wedding cake arrives on time and looks spectacular!
